The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has approved the amendment of some laws in the 1999 Constitution.
The approval comes after extensive deliberations by the lawmakers following the adoption of the National Assembly bill on the 15 amended acts.
Speaker of the House, Mr. Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, who made the statement during a plenary in Lafia, the capital, said that they had approved 12 out of the 15 alterations as requested by the National Assembly.
Some of the items adopted were independent candidacy for elections, financial autonomy for state houses of assembly and political age limit for the President to be reduced from 40 to 35 years.
Balarabe-Abdullahi, however, revealed that two of the items not adopted during the session would be subjected to public hearing so as to accommodate inputs from stakeholders.
Speaking further, he said local government autonomy and the strengthening of the local administration were two areas that would be subjected to public hearing soon.
He said, “The 1999 Constitution, if amended, would go a long way in promoting good governance as well as give every Nigerian a sense of belonging for the socio-economic development of the country.
“We want to assure Nigerians of our support towards the constitutional amendment for good governance and speedy development of the country.”
While urging Nigerians to support the government for the interest of peace and national development, Balarabe-Abdullahi said that the Nasarawa State House of Assembly would continue to enact laws and pass resolutions that would have positive impact on the lives of the people.
