The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the election of Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.
The panel of justices led by Tanko Ibrahim affirmed the judgments of the Bayelsa State Election Petitions Tribunal and the appellate court.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in he election, Timipre Sylva, had challenged the victory of Dickson, alleging that the election was marred with irregularities.
Sylva asked the tribunal to declare him the duly elected governor.
But having lost at the tribunal and appellate court, Sylva headed for the apex court.
Reacting to the victory, Governor Dickson commended the Judiciary for rising up to the occasion by standing firm and reaffirming the earlier decisions of the tribunal and the Appeal Court, which had also dismissed the petition of the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva contesting his victory.
Governor Dickson used the occasion to express his gratitude to the people of the State for their unwavering support before, during and after the last governorship election in the state.
While thanking God for his victory at the apex court, he restated his commitment to developing the state to the best of his abilities, stressing that, despite the economic downturn, his administration will not renege on its agenda of restoration consolidation.
“This is a total victory and it is for the entire people of Bayelsa State and a victory for our the nation’s democracy” he noted.
