The Africa Cup of Nations 2024 ended recently, providing many surprises. Also, this tournament was preceded by several interesting facts, which will be discussed in this article.

As the Africa Cup of Nations 2024 has now concluded, fans and followers of the event may be looking back at the tournament to relive the excitement and analyse the outcomes. For those interested in the intersection of sports and betting, https://ghanasoccernet.com/ng/app-reviews/bet9ja-nigeria-app/ provided detailed insights and reviews that enriched the football experience for many. This platform offered a unique perspective on the games, highlighting the vibrancy and dynamism of African football through expert analysis and commentary. The tournament itself, filled with unexpected turns and historic achievements, vividly illustrated the continent’s footballing passion and talent.

Format of the Cup

The African Cup of Nations (CAN) was held for two years in a country in Africa. The absolute champion is Egypt (7), followed by Cameroon (5), Ghana (4) and Nigeria (3); all have qualified for the main stage. Ghana and Egypt got into the same group, with Nigeria going to the organisers.

This year (like many in a row), 24 teams played, the format was 6 groups of 4 participants.

Two countries went directly into the playoffs; another 4 had a chance to qualify from the third-place rankings. Côte d’Ivoire hosted the tournament for the first time, although it had previously hosted the CAN in 1984, then as the Republic of Ivory Coast. It was the one that went on to win the tournament.

The Weather Has Moved the Competition

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was supposed to be played six months ago when it would have been convenient for everyone. However, the African Confederation decided to move the time of the CAN because Cote d’Ivoire traditionally suffers from a heavy rainy season in summer (this is the second time in a row that the date has been changed).

200 Footballers from Europe

Traditionally, many African players of the European variety have moved to the tournament. That’s 200 such players in the 16-team squad bids! 88 are Ligue 1 players, 48 from the APL, and another 37 from Serie A. The rest are from La Liga and the Bundesliga. By now, clubs are forced to hedge with squad depth, as it is unknown when the national teams will return home. And that includes Salah, Kudus, Alle, Osimhen, Mane and Girassi (potentially up to 7 matches).

Interesting fan fact: the Asian Cup is also being held in parallel, which will “kidnap” top players (Son, Tomiyasu, Ryan). It gets less attention than the CAN, but it’s a bunch of extra problems for European clubs.

What’s on the Prize Money?

World football is saturated with big money – this year, it has reached the Africa Cup of Nations. The winner got 40% more than last time – over €6m. The second finalist received €3.6m, and the semi-finalists received €2.3m each.

Terrible Incident with Gambia

But no sooner had the Cup started tragedy almost struck. The Gambian national team and the coaching staff flew to Cote d’Ivoire – and on the way, several players fainted, including defender Djanko. The pilots returned in time. As it turned out – there was a depressurisation in the plane; a bunch of players got dizziness, possibly also poisoning due to lack of oxygen. And if we remember that the national team complained about non-payment of prize money the day before the departure, it already turned out to be a thriller. And during the tournament the team went on strike because of non-payment of prize money.

Twice for Twins

The phenomenon of having siblings involved in the same national team is also found in top teams. Mauritania has two such cases at the Cup: Nouh Mohamed El Abd and his younger brother Sidi. Both play for local side Nouadhibou. The other two are Lamine Ba and El Hadji. Born in France, this is the first time they have been called up to the national team at the CAN. Every other country in the tournament has siblings who can play for the country together.

With the curtains closed on the Africa Cup of Nations 2024, the event leaves a legacy of memorable moments, thrilling matches, and celebrating African football’s rich culture. The tournament showcased the continent’s top footballing talent and brought together nations in a spirited competition that captivated audiences worldwide. From the opening kickoff to the final whistle, each game was a testament to the participating teams’ skill, determination, and unity. As we reflect on this year’s tournament, it’s clear that the Africa Cup of Nations remains a cornerstone of the international football calendar, offering a platform for stars to shine and inspiring the next generation of talent across Africa and beyond.

The journey to the next tournament begins with anticipation as the legacy of the 2024 edition continues to resonate with fans, players, and nations alike.
