The Lagos State Government at the weekend set a target for Directors of Administration and Human Resource under its employ to attain global best practices in human resource management to boost productivity.
Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola spoke at the opening ceremony of a two-Retreat for the directors in Victoria Island, Lagos, said the theme of the event, “Principles, Policies, Practices and Procedures of Human Resource Management in the Public Service: A thorough look at the Workplace in Current Realities.”
He said the theme was very apt given current realities and the critical place of Administration and Human Resource Management (HRM) in policy making, strategic planning and policy implementation.
“This Retreat is therefore designed to take a thorough look at the Public Service and the role of Administration & Human Resource viz-a-viz our new realities.
“Essentially, the purpose of HRM is to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its employees, a mandate that is unlikely to change in any fundamental way, despite the ever-increasing pace of change in the business world.
“Therefore, it is very safe to say that what is obtainable in the Private Sector Human Resource Management is not different from that of the Public Sector. Therefore, our main focus in the Public Service should be the attainment of global best practices in HRM,” he said.
Muri-Okunola stated that principles, policies, practices and procedures played vital roles in providing structure and direction to HRM operations in any organization, “therefore, the need for constant review of these 4 Ps by Human Resource Managers in our various MDAs should not be underestimated.”
He said he looked forward to the directors in various MDAs providing guiding policies more on training needs, incentives/motivation, non-subjective staff performance evaluation and management system as well as a reward and compensation system that is fair and equitable.
Muri-Okunola restated the present administration’s clear commitment to continuous capacity development of its workforce towards building a workforce of thoroughbred professionals that are competent, versatile and relevant to the present and future needs of the State.
He urged them to take advantage of the retreat while also remaining mindful to continue to develop themselves in line with the Public Service vision to be a world-class organization that is committed to excellence.
Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mr. Samson Ajibade implored the participants to ensure that they take advantage of the training by seasoned professionals in the area of administration, just as he urged them to make the session an interactive one. – The News.
