The wife of the Governor of Enugu State, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, has enjoined women in the country to continue to pray for their leaders to be guided by God to surmount various challenges they are facing in governance.
The First Lady of the state while speaking on the occasion of the flag-off ceremony of the 2015 Enugu State Women August General Meeting at the Holy Ghost Catholic Cathedral, Ogui, Enugu, advised women not to engage themselves in activities that would breed rancor and acrimony during this year’s August meeting activities in their various communities.
She reminded them that the August meeting event provides forum to make peace with one another, exchange positive ideas that enhance the development of the communities, among others.
Mrs. Ugwuanyi noted that August meeting is a mandatory annual meeting meant to bring women together at their matrimonial rural home towns to enhance unity and rural development. She added that the event is also utilized by women for conflict management, peace building and rural development.
She however regretted that the event has now lost focus as some women used the occasion to showcase their affluence, materialism and other unwanted activities.
Mrs. Ugwuanyi advocated for engagement of women in appropriate skill acquisition, service orientation, financial empowerment. She also called on appropriate authorities to grant soft loans to women in the state to boost their micro businesses or new investment projects to enhance zeal for skill acquisition and poverty alleviation among women.
She commended women in the state for their roles in bringing peace in their various families, adding that when there is peace in the family, there will be peace in the society. She wished all women in the state journey mercies in this year’s August meeting.
In a homily during a church service for the event, Monsignor Anthony Okafor enjoined women to spread the words of God in their various communities during this year’s general return.
With a theme, “Blessed are the Merciful for they shall find Mercy Matt 5 vs 7, the clergy urged women to love one another and to help each other as people of Christian family.
In a brief remark, the President General Women Catholic Organization, Enugu Diocese, Mrs. Eunice Oguanya, expressed delight that the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Ugwuanyi had flagged-off the 2015 August Meeting in the state and offered motherly advice to all intending participants of the event.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the plaque of Blessed Virgin Mary by Mrs. Ugwuanyi.
The First Lady was accompanied by the wife of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs. Akunna Ubosi and the PDP Women Leader in the state, Mrs. Oby Nwofor among others.
