The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said it dedicated 2017 to Nigerian telecom consumers because they are the main driver of the telecom industry.
The NCC said though the regulator, operators and consumers all deserved credit for the positive growth witnessed in the country’s telecom industry in the last 16 years, the consumers should take more applaud because of their loyalty and patience.
The commission does not joke about any issue affecting the consumers and will go to any length to protect their interests; the NCC Executive Vice Chairman Prof Umar Garba Danbatta said yesterday when members of Daily Trust Management visited the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Prof Danbatta said the commission listens and acts promptly on complaints from consumers while also taking criticisms from consumers against it in good faith.
The NCC boss said even as he sits in his office in Abuja he gets to know, through the media and the NCC feedback mechanisms, the complaints and feelings of the telecom consumers across the country.
He said: “I saw a publication before I came here that says N3.3 trillion was spent on telecom services by consumers in the country last year.
“This is the most important sector in the country; the industry is a money-spinning industry. And the government recognises the important roles the sector is playing. Over N1.4 trillion contributed per quarter by the sector to the economy every year…but we couldn’t have done what we have done successfully if not for the help and contribution of the media.”
The Daily Trust delegation was led by the chairman of Media Trust Limited Malam Kabir Yusuf. Other members of the Daily Trust team on the visit were Chief Executive Officer/Editor-in-Chief Mannir Dan Ali, Umar Abdullahi (Director), Bello Damagum (Director), the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Abhay Desai and the Associate Director (Business & Strategy), Aliu Akoshile.
