The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Saturday announced that subscribers can now opt-in and opt-out of unsolicited SMS services.
The NCC Director, Public Affairs announced the commencement of “The Regime of Control of #unsolicitedMessages” via twitter.
According to Ojobo, the “services have been classified as follows: 1.Banking/Insurance /Financial Products 2. Real Estate 3. Education 4. Health 5. Consumer goods; Automobiles 6. Communications/Broadcasting/Entertainment /IT 7. Tourism and leisure 8. Sports 9. Religion ( Christian, Muslim, others)
“Command Code SMS (1 – 9) are to be used to activate a Do Not Disturb ( DND) instruction your Service Provider of the Subscriber. For Full DND SMS “STOP” to 2442. In this case you do not want to receive any messages excluding Person to Person ( P to P) SMS; For Partial DND; this means you want to receive messages for a particular service. “SMS” 1 for receiving Banking/ Financial Services”.
He said that subscribers can send “2” to 2442 to receive SMS relating to Real Estate. “3” for Education. “4” for Health; “5” for Consumer goods/ Automobiles; send “6” 2442 to receive information on Entertainment/Communications/Broadcasting “7” Tourism information, e.g Hotels, Sites etc.
“Send “8” to 2442 for information or messages on Sports. “9” for receiving messages relating to religion. All Command Codes are to 2442”, adding that “@NgComCommission advices that subscribers contact their #ServiceProviders for more information if required or call 622.
