Abuja – Arrangements have been concluded to camp some Nigerian athletes to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the Republic of Japan.
President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel who revealed this yesterday in Abuja also said the Asian country has accepted to kit the Nigerian contingent to the global fiesta.
Gumel who is also the president of the Nigeria Volley Ball Federation (NVBF) spoke during the closing ceremony of a Three-day Coaching Course the federation organized in conjunction with the embassy of Japan in Nigeria.
According to him, the gesture is in line with the effort of his reign both as the NOC and NVBF boss to improve on the nation’s sports development. He further stated that the country has been assisting in the training of coaches of the NVBF.
“I requested and they have accepted to provide kitting for our athletes who will be travelling to Rio for the Olympics. In fact this has been happening because when we were going to China I made a request and they gave to us free of charge as well as during the games in London. Now that we are going to Rio, they have accepted and in fact by May the items will be in our embassy in Tokyo from where it will be airlifted and distributed to our athletes.”
In is remarks, Deputy Head of Mission of Japan Masaya Otsuka said the training arrangement was put together through the friendly relationship between the NVBF president and his Japanese counterpart.
He further revealed that the programme equally falls within the Japanese government’s ‘Sports for Tomorrow’ programme committed towards Tokoyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games. Vanguard
