Despite widespread criticism of his economic policies, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received commendation for various initiatives aimed at repositioning the country for growth and development.
In a statement on Tuesday, marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara challenged critics, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, asserting that his administration would not yield to “barefaced blackmail.”
He emphasized a commitment to consolidating gains in peace, good governance, critical projects, and increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Reflecting on Nigeria’s historic independence, Governor Fubara recalled the moment on October 1, 1960, when the first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, raised the nation’s green-white-green flag, symbolizing freedom from British colonial rule.
“The vision of our founding fathers was to create a united and secure nation built on brotherhood, democracy, justice, and equality for all peoples and tribes,” he stated.
He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of leaders, past and present, to unify the country and improve citizens’ well-being. However, he lamented that despite these efforts, Nigeria still grapples with significant challenges, including widespread insecurity, after 64 years of self-governance. “Yet, amidst economic hardships and social ills, we have reasons to celebrate and express gratitude as a nation,” he said.
Fubara praised Nigeria’s reputation as a hardworking, confident, and happy people, highlighting the nation’s rich cultural diversity and abundant natural and human resources.
He urged citizens to collaborate with the Federal Government to address economic, social, and political challenges, including nepotism, corruption, and abuse of power, which have hindered democracy and economic growth.
The governor commended President Tinubu for his bold approach to economic reforms aimed at correcting historical structural issues. He called on fellow governors to intensify efforts against insecurity and oil theft, stressing that these measures are essential for the success of ongoing economic reforms.
“On our part, we assure the Federal Government and Mr. President of our unwavering loyalty and support from the government and people of Rivers State. We reaffirm our commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress as one indivisible nation,” Fubara stated.
He pledged that his administration would diligently work to ensure the safety and security of lives and property while promoting equal social and economic opportunities for all residents of Rivers State.
