Kwara United secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Kano Pillars in a thrilling Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 28 encounter at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl, George Innih Stadium, on Sunday.
The Harmony Boys dominated from the start, with Akanni Akeem and Shola AbdulRaheem controlling the midfield, while Ibrahim Yahaya and Segun Adekunle marshaled the defense to keep the visitors at bay.
Their attacking pressure paid off in the 20th minute when AbdulRaheem was brought down in the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Wasiu Alalade stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick, sending the home fans into wild celebration.
Despite Kano Pillars’ efforts, led by Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Kwara United maintained their grip on the game.
In the second half, substitute Wasiu Jimoh made an instant impact, unleashing a powerful strike from close range to double the lead and seal a well-earned victory.
Kano Pillars had a few late chances, but stellar performances from Jimoh Gbadamosi and Nurudeen Badmus ensured the visitors remained goalless.
Head coach Tunde Sanni lauded his players for their discipline and execution of the game plan.
“The way my players approached this game reflects our position on the log. This victory is well-deserved,” he said.
Dignitaries in attendance included Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, APC chieftain Ambassador Yayaha Seriki, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara Sports Commission, Coach Bola Magaji, all of whom cheered the team to victory.
Following the win, Ambassador Seriki pledged a ₦5 million reward to the team.
The victory lifts Kwara United to 10th place on the NPFL table with 39 points from 28 matches. Their next challenge is an away clash against Rangers in Enugu next weekend.
Speaking with sports journalists after the match, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed confidence in the team’s potential to secure a continental ticket.
“The fans’ support is overwhelming,” said an elated AbdulRazaq, who recently renamed the stadium after late Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini.
“It was a good game despite the fasting. We move forward to maintain top performance so that we can go continental. If you recall, we competed at the continental level a few years back,” he added.
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa also praised the ongoing renovation of sports infrastructure at the George Innih Stadium, commending AbdulRazaq for his efforts.
