A police inspector attached to the State Intelligence Bureau of the Nasarawa State Police Command has allegedly raped and impregnated his 15-year-old niece.

The state Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rabiatu Addra, stated this during a press briefing in Lafia on Wednesday.

She explained that a whistleblower reported to FIDA that the victim was repeatedly raped by the suspect, who was her uncle.

Rabiatu further said the cop had been arrested and vowed to ensure that he was prosecuted.

While appealing to the police authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, she said FIDA would follow up on the case until justice was served.

She said, “On receipt of the information by the whistleblower, FIDA, in conjunction with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Team, facilitated and mobilised police officers to get the suspect arrested.

“Our team, with the police, took the victim to a hospital and paid for her treatment but unfortunately she lost the six-month-old baby.

“The state Ministry of Justice further paid the bill for a DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain the real culprit.”

Rabiatu said the victim had been discharged from the hospital and reunited with her family.

“We are appealing to victims of abuse to always have the confidence to speak out so that we can render the necessary support to them,” she added.

Efforts to reach the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, proved abortive, as he did not respond to phone calls and text messages sent to his mobile lines.

In a related development, the police in Ekiti State have arrested a man, Babatunde Ojo, for allegedly raping and impregnating his15-year-old stepdaughter at Obadore, Omuo Ekiti, in the Ekiti East area of the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Moronkeji Adesina, said the suspect was arrested by operatives from the Juvenile Welfare Centre of the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command on July 22.

The CP, in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, titled, ‘Ekiti police command arrests man for raping, impregnating15 years old stepdaughter,’ said the suspect, who had confessed to the act, would be arraigned in due course.

Adesina stated, “The victim, who is already four months’ pregnant, claimed that the suspect, who is also her stepfather, had unlawful carnal knowledge of her severally before and after she became pregnant.

“She explained that the stepfather started raping her when her mother gave birth through Caesarean section and had to spend about three weeks in the hospital, leaving her and the stepfather at home.

“According to her, the stepfather used to have unlawful carnal knowledge of her at home when her mother was away and oftentimes lured her into the farm and defiled her after which he would threaten her never to tell anyone or face the consequence.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the crime and claimed it was the handiwork of the devil. The suspect will be arraigned accordingly.”
