Members of the House of Representatives have called on the Federal Ministry of Works to complete the rehabilitation of Enugu-Onitsha expressway in good time for the convenience of road users.
The call was made on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, in a motion by Eucharia Azodo, which was adopted by the House without debate
Order VIII, Rule 51 (5) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives provides that such motion are not open for a debate, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Azodo, the deplorable state of the road causes motorists to veer into the adjoining bushes in an effort to find alternative routes.
“This area has, therefore, become a den of armed robbers who attack motorists, especially at night,” she said.
She told the House that ongoing rehabilitation of the road had produced poor quality work.
“The expressway, which links Enugu and Anambra states, is a trunk `A’ road that is of vital economic importance to the people of the two states in particular, and the generality of Nigerians.
“If nothing is done to complete the rehabilitation of the road, it will continue to dilapidate,” Azodo said.
Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, mandated the Committee on Works, when constituted, to liaise with the Ministry of Works to ensure the road is completed soon. – NAN.
