The wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugochi Ugwuanyi, has
charged women in the state to submit themselves of the opportunity
provided by the ongoing free cervical cancer test/screening exercise.
Mrs. Ugwuanyi who made the call when she led the awareness road walk
show campaign on the danger of cervical cancer organized by the
association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) in
collaboration with her pet project, Ugo touch of Life Foundation,
Enugu, said that they could do so by visiting any of the available
health care providers nearest to them in the state for free test and
treatment.
Emphasizing the importance of the exercise following its theme
“Prevent and treat cervical cancer with the right test at the right
time”, Mrs. Ugwuanyi noted that it was fashioned to educate and inform
women and mothers of the danger of the illness when left to be
chronic.
Earlier in an interview, the chairman of National Chairman
Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, Dr. Albert Kalong
Alkaili, said that the event was organized to remind mothers and women
that there are often no signs of symptoms at the early stages of
cervical cancer when it could be successfully treated.
Dr. Alkaili explaind that symptoms of cervical cancer tend to appear
only after the cancer has reached an advanced stage and may include
irregular, inter-menstrual cycle between periods or abnormal vaginal
bleeding after several inter-course.
Other symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite,
virginal discomfort or odourous discharge among other symptoms.
He enjoined them to prevent cervical cancer by getting themselves
vaccinated and going for regular cervical cancer screening early in
life.
The road walk show which took-off at Okpara Square, Enugu took the
participants along major roads and streets in Enugu metropolis
including Presidential road, among others.
